A mountain in morroco: Toubkal

  • Altitude: 4,167 m / 13,671 ft

  • The highest peak in the Atlas Mountains, North Africa, and the Arab-Speaking World.

  • Drive 2 hours from Marakesh to the mountain village of Imlil, the gateway to the Atlas. Stock up on fuel and basic food and find your guide from the Bureau des Guide located near the bottom of the village.

  • You can reach the summit in 1 day, even including your journey from Marakesh however, we recommend staying a night at the base in one of the many spots in/near Imlil. Take in the scenery and get prepared for your summit attempt.

  • There are two official mountain huts constituting Toubkal base camp - CAF's Nelter Refuge (3,207m) and the privately owned Mouflon Refuge just below.

  • Typically climbers set off a few hours pre-dawn to catch the sunrise at the top. It's a quick 1000m vertical gain in just over 3.5km.

  • Morocco's most popular climb, which isn't technical, especially during the summer but should still be taken seriously, especially in winter when it's snow-covered.

  • Kit list:

    • Hiking boots

    • Pack

    • Waterproof shell

    • Thermal layer

    • Water

    • Snack for the summit

  • Here are some pictures from a decent Lonely Planet article on the climb and some other local hikes in the area from Journey of Nomads.
