The Walser Trail, Alps

An epic route, following the historic route of Austria and Switzerland's pioneering Walser (pronounced 'Vall-zer') people of the 13th Century through scenic mountain valleys, dramatic gorges, and ancient Alpine villages.

Composed of 19 one-day "stages" stretching from Valais in Switzerland to the Austrian-German border. Divided by mouintain huts where you can stay each evening. Be sure to reserve a bunk.

You can drop in to the trail at various point along the way, if you don't have time for the full journey. Take in a few stages over a long weekend.  

Trail length: 200 m / 315 km  

Elevation gain: 20,000 m  
Typical time to complete the full route: 19 days (1 stage per day)
Time to complete each stage: 4-7 hours

Kit list

  • Hiking boots

  • Hiking trousers (and shorts)

  • T-shirt 

  • Mid-layer fleece, for when the temperature dips on the trail 

  • Down jacket just in case it gets cold at night

  • Outer waterproof shell jacket

  • Sun hat & glasses + beanie for the evening 

  • Pack 

  • Headtorch  

  • A good book

  • Camera 

  • 2-3 liter camelback for water + water filter for refilling

  • Sandwiches, nuts, fruit, and bars for lunches on the trail
